#it's definitely more suited for playing with a mouse and keyboard but I was impressed with how they handled controller input

I've spent the last 3 days absolutely consumed by Hypnospace Outlaw and wowww 10/10 what a fantastic game!
It'd been on my wishlist for years, but I kept putting it off because it looked kind of... messy? All over the place? And it IS! It's just as messy as the early internet culture it's paying homage to, it revels in it, but it's held together by a surprisingly dry and logic-based gameplay loop. You're a moderator of a y2k era online community and it's your job to collect evidence of the users' misdemeanors. That's all.
I think it's best to go into the game without knowing anything about the plot, but the gameplay actually reminded me a lot of the puzzle approach in Return of the Obra Dinn, where you have to play detective, alternating between going down the rabbit holes the games throws at you, while at the same time keeping a methodical overview of the information you've gathered. Return of the Obra Dinn is perhaps my favorite puzzle game of all time, so it's very high praise when I use it as a comparison.
And then, on top of that pretty solid core, Hypnospace Outlaw has ssooo much heart. There are so many little side stories you can dig into, so many odd characters, so much creativity - there's like 20 different music acts that were made up specifically for this game, many of them quite good, there's art collectives, there's drama, there's conspiracy theories, there's games within the game, and all of it is sprinkled with a healthy dose of satire of capitalism, tech-bro culture, and what the internet is like today. And it's so impressive how, despite how much content is there, almost all of it ties in with the main plot in one way or another.
I'm just blabbering to get my excitement out of my system, but if you're looking for an untraditional puzzle game, it has my most heartfelt recommendations.
Now, I'll have to find the soundtrack so I can listen to my sweet Fungus Scene tunes

Steam Deck First Impressions

For anyone unaware, the Steam Deck is a handheld gaming computer developed by Valve with the main purpose of getting their Steam library onto a portable platform. After the their commercial flop of the home console the Steam Machine, they basically shifted towards a number of solutions to make sure their next attempt to bring Steam games to more people would go a little smoother. Enter the Steam Deck, a device that's best described as a chunkier yet beefier Nintendo Switch that is specifically tailored to run Steam games quickly and conveniently. I've been using it for roughly a week and half now and wanted to share some of my first impressions.
The physical design is pretty good. While it's a bit big to be going in any pockets and a bit heavy too, it's ergonomically very fitting to the hands. There's enough to hold onto so that makes it feel a bit lighter and to be fair, it's not as big as the promotional materials lead me to believe. For size comparison, it's about as long as the Switch with the Hori Split Pad Pro joycons on, though still thicker. Or relatively similar in size and feel to the Wii U Gamepad, though notably heavier than that. I got the 512GB model but it does have a microSD card slot for external storage expansion. There's also a headphone jack and a USB-C port for charging and peripherals. I tested these out some with headphones and a headset in the jack. I used the USB port to connect a mouse, a keyboard, a controller, and a USB hub to do all three at once no problem. I even connected a USB-C to HDMI cable to use it on my TV in the meantime waiting for the official dock to come out (which has at the time of writing this). I didn't test anything with the bluetooth connection but most of the USB stuff I connected with a USB-A to USB-C adapter with no issues.
After a quick setup I was logged in and ready to start using the Deck. The SteamOS interface here is pretty smooth aside from a few pages that require touch input or a mouse to navigate. You can tweak some settings but the biggest ones are brightness and frames per second because these will make a noticeable difference in battery life. While it's only a 1280x720 16:10 LCD display, being able to play in 60fps with this much powerful hardware is definitely a jump up from a Switch in handheld mode. One of my absolute favorite things they've implemented on the Deck is the compatibility system. Fixed specs means they can test if games are compatible or not pretty easily. Anything with a green check mark is considered great on Deck with full compatibility. A yellow “i” means it'll work but some features may not be ideal for the Deck such as interface, text, and so on. There are unsupported titles which may work just fine but are considered too much of a hassle to get working, among others I'm sure just won't work. I haven't found any yet that failed to launch or run but I did have one poorly optimized indie game become more trouble than it was worth to fix. And then there are the question mark ones that aren't tested enough to categorize. The reason I love this compatibility system is because I can just open up the store or the library, filter for everything with a green check mark, download, and I'm playing. No need to hunt through specs and hope it'll magically work with my configuration.
It's also even easier to play because most games will pick a default template for the Steam Deck controls, but you can also change templates to other presets or custom community ones. Plus the trackpads, touch screen, and extra back buttons give you lots of extra inputs and ways to control games otherwise not well suited to controller inputs. The innards of this machine are pretty respectable as well. Sure, it's no match for a full gaming rig, but for a portable system it does an admirable job delivering great performance and visuals. It feels so nice to just turn on a game, have it work, and be able to play with controller-type controls. I mostly have been watching YouTube stuff on the side while playing and it's great. No need to setup at my computer and plug in all my stuff. I can just pick this up, turn it on, and go. You do need internet for the cloud sync or downloading games, though. Cloud sync actually lets you switch between that and your PC pretty seamlessly. You can also use the auto-suspend of putting the Deck to sleep to resume games later without closing or leaving the system on. So easy and convenient and capable.
Is the Steam Deck a Nintendo Switch killer? Probably not. The libraries don't really overlap a ton so if anything it's like a Switch companion because if you already like playing games that way then you'll probably be more enticed to get through your Steam backlog on the Deck. It could replace it if you used a Switch emulator but that's not likely very legal. And to be fair, while I know you can do tons more with the Steam Deck in terms of emulators and dual booting operating systems and all that, I really just got it to play Steam games. That's what it was made for. And in that regard I think it excels incredibly well. It's a much cheaper alternative to gaming laptop for the ease of portable PC gaming. It's easier to pick up and play at a moments notice to relax than on a PC too. It can play a lot more games with more options and content than modern consoles and handhelds as well. And for anyone on the fence about which way to lean between console and PC, this comes in not only as a good midpoint experience, but also a midpoint price. It's just so impressive and it really does exactly what I've wanted for my Steam games for the longest time. It gives me the ability to spend less time troubleshooting and more time actually playing. If you think you'll like the Steam Deck already, you probably will. Go for it. It's worth it. But we'll see how it holds up past these first impressions as time goes on. I'll keep ya posted. Until then, thanks for listening to me ramble. It's just really nice to still find reasons to be excited about gaming.

I actually had to source a guide online for control usage, and found a good one on Ground Zeroes that mostly works, except they changed CQC commands from arrow keys to number keys. The only caveat is Japanese developers are very console (cough, SONY) centric, so even if you do get good actual KB/M performance, there are still little quirks, like inadequate control explanation in the controls menu, mapping diagrams that only serve gamepad users, and even gamepad prompts showing onscreen instead of KB/M ones. I find that analog sticks are horribly inadequate for aiming, which is why a lot of games, even shooters like CoD Black Ops III, still have auto target for them. I still need to figure out the hitbox for helmeted headshots, though. It's not been perfect and half the time it's killed my stealth runs, but thankfully the game is tolerant of this and I've just gotten past Traitor's Caravan (with a lot of Side Ops grinding involved to make the GMP needed for beating it). There's definitely that complaint I have alongside others that movement is way too imprecise on keyboard (especially for this kind of stealth game) and that aiming is rather imprecise on gamepads as well, so I've been playing about 50 or so hours on gamepads to try and learn how to overcompensate with FPS thumbstick aiming which compared to all the other problems is usually the bane of my existence. There was a time when I would play third-person shooters with KBM like GTA IV but those times effectively died once I got a gamepad that the games were originally designed for, with mainly the exception of certain GTA Online missions where KBM accuracy's vital to pulling off a timing-sensitive assault. Swap out the PS4 controller for a wired 360 controller and you've got my general attitude on it. Played this mostly with a PS4 controller. Too bad the game won't allow for using controller+mouse at the same time and also does not support remapping of the controller binds, would actually love to try that combination.įor some reason, I like kb&m for 1st person games, but prefer controller for 3rd person games. I do miss the accuracy of using the mouse tho, aiming with the sticks never felt natural to me and having to depend so much on auto-aim (there's even weapon mods for increasing it) feels kinda cheap. There is a separate keybind for "slow walk"? I didn't even notice that, tho i didn't play around that much with kb&m because the lack of analog movement just felt too weird for an MGS game. As for the movement, I mapped sprint to shift, crouch to ctrl, slow walk to spacebar, and dive to alt, and never had a problem sneaking up behind people, even without the sneaking suit. With a mouse I can turn 180 with near equal speed and effort as I can line up headshots, no bullet time or auto aim required. How anyone could characterize analog sticks as even remotely "precise" blows me away. Trying to aim a gun quickly and accurately with a controller is fucking maddening. Trackpad tech isn't as precise as it needs to be. From what I've heard of that thing though, it doesn't sound very impressive. I am kind of desperately hoping the Steam controller fixes this problem by offering the precision of both mouse aiming and controller movement. Someone needs to make a mod that does that for MGS V. I think that is brilliant and I have no idea why any stealth game wouldn't do that on PC. I mentioned this on the Steam forums and someone who agreed mentioned that the Splinter Cell games would map the mouse wheel to movement speed. I love the precision of movement I can get with the analog stick. Sneaking suit dampens the sound of footsteps but it's not perfect.

Holding ctrl makes me move too slow, it's impossible to sneak behind anyone unless they are standing still because they walk faster than me. I move too quickly and they hear my footsteps. I really wanted to play with K+M because aiming is so much more accurate.īut the movement controls! GAH! It's terrible on a keyboard.

Why isn’t my trackpad working?
If a MacBook Pro trackpad not working is ruining your day, there could be a simple fix. First, let’s explore why your trackpad may be spontaneously unresponsive.

The first thing to do is check if your version of macOS needs an update. To do so, click the Apple logo in the Mac’s menu bar, select ‘about this Mac,’ then ‘software update.’ If the Mac you’re using has new firmware available, download it.

How to fix trackpad on your MacBook

Check system preferences

Disable force click
The trackpad on your MacBook has two main interactivity types: force click, and tap to click. The difference between the two is how firmly you need to press your trackpad to get a response. Tapping allows you to simply tap the trackpad to select items, while force clicking demands you press firmly enough on your trackpad to hear (and feel) a click.

If you’re tapping and not clicking, it may be the cause of your issues. Here’s how to toggle the setting:
Select the Apple logo at the top left corner of the Mac menu bar
Select “System Preferences”
Select “Trackpad”
Under the “Point & Click” heading, toggle the “Force Click and haptic feedback” off
In this heading, you can also tweak how forcefully you need to tap or click your trackpad to elicit a response. Simply select the “Click” slider, and change the setting to suit your needs.
Reset trackpad
A MacBook pro trackpad reset is not as daunting as it seems. All you’re really doing is toggling your MacBook’s trackpad back to the factory settings in System Preferences.
Most of us altered the settings of our trackpad to better suit our individual needs, and it may have caused issues in the background that causes a trackpad to become unresponsive. To toggle settings back to their original positions, follow the first three steps above to get into the “Trackpad” section in System Preferences.
Make sure “Tap to click” is unselected. In the “Scroll & Zoom” header, ensure “Scroll direction: Natural” is selected. These two setting should return your trackpad to its default state.
Reset NVRAM or PRAM
A lot of niggling issues can be solved with a simple NVRAM or PRAM reset. It’s a simple fix you can do any time, too. Here’s how:
Shut down the MacBook completely
Wait 30-60 seconds
Open MacBook and press the power button
Once the MacBook screen illuminates, immediately press and hold the option, command, P, and R keys
Hold the keys down for 20 seconds, or until you hear a startup sound
Release the keys and let your MacBook boot up normally
Reset the SMC
The SMC reset protocol depends on which MacBook you have. For those MacBooks introduced in 2017 or earlier, follow these steps:
Power down MacBook completely
With the MacBook off, press and hold the shift, control, and option keys
While holding those keys, press and hold the power button
Hold all four keys for ten seconds, then release
Press the power button to boot the MacBook
For MacBooks 2018 or later (with a T2 security chip) follow these steps:
Shut down your MacBook, and make sure it’s unplugged from any power supply
Wait 15 seconds, and plug the MacBook in
Wait five seconds, then power MacBook on by pressing the power button
Run Apple diagnostics
Your MacBook can run a simple diagnostics check from startup. Here’s how it’s done:
Disconnect the MacBook from all external devices except a power supply (if necessary)
Shut down your Mac completely
Power the Mac back on while holding down the D key
When you see a screen asking your language preference, release the D key and select your preferred language
Allow the diagnostics to complete its check

Rainfall and Sparks
A story following two partners on the last few legs of their mission.
“Laet, I’m going to the gas station,” Evan said as she walked out of the bathroom.
The room was brightly illuminated by the lamps sitting on both sides of the bedside table. Their soft yellow glow casting warmth into the drab grey interior of the hotel room, forming shadows on her companion’s face.
“It’s going to rain soon. Here,” Laet procured a small black umbrella from her travel bag, “take this.”
Evan accepted the umbrella with a small kiss, her long pale body hidden within her oversized sweatpants and jumper. She stood in the centre of the room, overlooking Laet. Her keys and trinkets jingling as she fiddled around in her pocket. “I’ll be on the intercom,” she said as she moved her reddy-brown hair out of her eyes, exposing her thick unkempt eyebrows.
Laet rolled her eyes as she continued to ruffle through her bag. “Could you stop using my underwear? You have your own,” she complained.
“Buy your own,” she shouted as Evan stepped out into the hallway, the sound of her footsteps lessening as the door clicked behind her. The corners of Laet’s mouth twitched upwards.
The room was quiet for only a second before it was awash with the rampant sounds of the daily life of eastern Verde. The sounds of cars aching on past through the peak hour traffic, the abrupt beeping of impatient drivers in the distance and the chirping and cawing of birds milling about in the trees brushing against the open windows.
Laet inhaled deeply as the fresh, earthy air outside seeped into the room. The breeze was cool and kind against her flushed skin. Twisting her mouth, Laet picked up the intercom lying beside her thigh and played with the buttons until came forth the familiar mix of different ringing tones meshed together.
Biiiiiiip… Briiiiiiing…
“Routing your call,” a mechanical voice intoned. Then silence.
“Uhhh, Agent Jugshit in the clear, over,” somebody staggered out. It was an impressive imitation of their coworker back home, Agent Dennis.
A husky voice could be heard on the other side of the intercom, his voice accompanied by the repeated clicking of a keyboard. “Oh shut up, Evan. You couldn’t be me even if you wanted,” Dennis snarked.
A different man snorted and soon, conversation was booming as her coworkers mercilessly teased each other. The two men on the line, Agents Dennis and Isaiah, were monitoring their target’s location all the way back from their home base in Lokaus.
The bickering of her companions faded into background noise as Laet continued to organise her garb for the night ahead. For when they would be called to approach and subdue Simon Kousch, a government operative that went rogue. Paid the Lokaus government's benevolence back with theft.
Laet spent hours on her flight over to Verde imagining what the Golden Eagle could be, and why its retrieval was so vital. Potentially a hard drive containing undisclosed files and unsanctioned cases, Laet mused. Cases like this one, perhaps?
She stood up and sat on the bed, bringing a small audio recorder onto her lap as she untangled its wires. Then again, does it even matter? “Evan, are you there y-?” She was interrupted by the ringing of a store entrance.
“Yeah, I’ve just entered the servo now, actually,” Evan replied distractedly.
There was a lull in the conversation. Laet itched the base of her scalp as she picked up a minuscule brown brick lying beside her clothes. It felt solid and heavy in her grasp, the ridges on its side helping her grip the device with ease. Laet lifted it higher and looked at its curved tip, the rounded glossy edge reflecting her brown face.
She methodically tightened her fingers around the device. A strong buzzing sound erupted from it, causing sparks of brown light to come from within its glossy black tip. Her hand shook from the vibration. She put it down, satisfied. “Just testing the brick,” Laet murmured.
Isaiah hummed in response.
Soon, the crinkling of plastic rang through the intercom. Dennis and Isaiah collectively sighed.
Evan clicked her tongue. “Listen, you signed up for this,” she said. The crinkling intensified. “You knew that working at The Warehouse meant that you could no longer have deliciously sour and savoury junk,” she drawled out, her grin practically transparent through the call.
“Sucks,” Laet said. “How about you get me some sour cream and chives and,” she said dragging the last word, “some Starbursts.”
“The big packet?” said Evan.
Laet scoffed. “When is it not?”
Dennis sighed once more. “Must be nice,” he said glumly.
Laet smiled, able to perfectly envision the sad, gloomy look in Dennis’ eyes as he said that. His elbow resting on the black bench with his palm smooshed into his cheek, his youthful brown skin making the sight all the more pitiful. They could hear Isaiah patting Dennis on the back and Laet rolled her eyes.
The clicking of a mouse rang through as Isaiah spoke up. “We have new intel for you.”
“Our overlords bless us,” Laet deadpanned.
Isaiah continued, “Simon’s at —and make sure you write this down—”
“Give me a second,” Evan muttered. “Alright, shoot.”
“The Hilltop Marquee up in Lower East, room 22 on the fourth floor. You got that down?”
Evan hummed.
Laet frowned. “Marquee?”
“It's a historical thing, I guess,” Dennis said.
“Why now?” Evan’s voice was faint, overshadowed by the tittering and chatter of women near her. They waited as Evan exchanged a few words with somebody before continuing on her way, the ringing of the store door behind her as she stepped back onto the roadside pavement towards their hotel.
“He's in contact with another high-level target,” Isaiah said.
“And that's a bad thing,” Dennis interjected. “You need to subdue Simon this nightfall, as planned.”
Laet picked up a light brown knife and rested it on her forearm, the blade tip near the crook of her elbow. The knife blended in well with her caramel skin, with only the serrated edge glinting.
“I'll send you the digitised perimeter of the area,” Isaiah said.
Laet removed the knife from her arm and leant over the bed, her fingers searching for a thin laptop just underneath. She grasped it and positioned herself back on the bed, the laptop already logged in.
The cursor began to move across the screen without her control and opened an application. It was an animated live feed of outside of the Hotel Marquee. The graphics were limited, comprising primarily of black line drawings and small red circles indicating civilians and hotel staff.
Laet zoomed into the hotel and clicked onto the entrance door of the hotel. The application adjusted itself so that the entirety of the first floor was in frame on the screen. Laet leaned towards the monitor as she scanned the screen. “Would I be foolish to assume that Simon’s indicator is distinct from the non-targets?”
“Yes,” Isaiah affirmed. “His is a yellow star one-point-seven times larger than the other indicators.”
“He's not currently there, but we have eyes on him,” Dennis said. “We expect him to be back later this evening.”
Laet clicked the toolbar up top of the application and the live feed changed to focus onto that of the second floor. Her mouth was pursed as she watched two small red circles walking down a hallway and into what she assumed to be a closet, their indicators coming so close together they almost appeared to merge into one. “He's in for a world of hurt tonight,” Laet muttered.
“That he definitely is,” Evan said softly.
Silence fell once more on the intercom.
The rain was not ideal. The sun had long gone past the horizon, leaving only dark blue skies blanketing above them. Harsh winds pelted raindrops against the sides of their face, the seeping chill of the rain distracting the women. But this was what they’d been working towards for months. They were tougher than smack of the raindrops, or the biting sting of the wind against their fingers and eyes.
The gravel below them gleamed with water and mud, their footsteps creating small splashes as Evan and Laet slunk towards the rear of the Hilltop Marquee. They inched towards the back, warily eyeing the small cliff adjacent to the hotel that leads down to a murky abyss.
This side of the hotel was empty. There were a few lights embedded in the wall barely illuminating the small stone steps underneath various grey doors. There were dozens of small balconies peering towards the sea overhead. Their intricate spiral design almost lost in the darkness.
Laet adjusted the cuffs on her glove before walking towards the building, raising her head as she regarded the balcony above her. They were fairly high above ground, almost double the height of Evan. “Anybody in there?” Laet asked. “We’re looking at the second floor, room 4.”
There was a brief pause of static on the intercom before Isaiah responded. His voice was clipped. “All clear.”
Evan cracked and released the pressure in her knuckles before bending her knees, jumping high into the air before grabbing the railing. Her arms were pressed flush against her body as she held herself up with only her hands, her feet finding anchorage on the balcony floor before throwing a leg and manoeuvring herself over it onto both feet.
Laet followed suit and jumped after her, her right hand slipping on the slick metal railing. She immediately grabbed at the horizontal bar underneath the top railing, gritting her teeth as her hand began slipping once more. Her left hand tightened in place as she swung her feet beneath her, using the momentum to heave her feet right at the edge of the balcony. Tightening her grip once more, Laet hauled herself upright until both hands were clutching the rail and threw herself over.
Evan simply tilted her head as Laet faced, causing Laet to flush. Those farting gloves.
Laet opened her mouth to speak before coming to a halt as Evan pulled down the lip of her scarf and wiped away at the trickle of snot slinking down and pooling into her philtrum. “You’re disgusting,” Laet grimaced before looking inside the room through the glass balcony door.
As she moved away from the direct wind and rainfall, Laet noticed the slight static in the intercom. “Isaiah? Can you still hear me?”
The time it took until Isaiah next spoke was uncomfortably long. “Yeah, I can. The system is getting a bit garbled, so bear with me.”
“Is the third floor clear, either room 10 or 11?” Evan asked as she played with the straps of her backpack crisscrossing over her stomach.
The static continued as Isaiah’s voice peeked through, unusually small. “All clear.”
The two followed each other upwards, angling their body over the edge of the hotel as they stood atop the balcony. They climbed onto the third floor, using the horizontal rails to inch upwards, their feet dangling freely in the air.
The two were grinning as they twisted themselves over the railing and onto solid ground. “That was some straight up spy shit,” Evan laughed.
Laet playfully nudged at her before resting her backside on the railing, asking once more: “Fourth floor, room 25?”
“Negative. Go to room 24,” Isaiah replied, his voice warbling in and out.
The static then went out, along with sound completely on the intercom. Evan and Laet looked at each other, their eyes wide at the silence in their ear. Laet lifted up the edge of her beanie and tapped at the intercom, half expecting it to turn back on.
Evan knelt down and unclasped the buckles of her backpack and placed it on a section of dry pavement. She opened the smallest zipper in the front and withdrew a small mobile-like device, then stuck her intercom into a small output parallel to the screen. The screen came alit, displaying various numbers and symbols.
“What’s wrong with it?” Laet asked as she peered towards the ground, keeping guard. She whipped her head as light shone through the curtains of the room to their left, room 26.
Evan’s fingers continued sliding on the screen, her gaze briefly flickering to the room now alive with people. “I don’t know,” Evan said slowly.
The hair on Laet’s arms stood up at that. Technology was not an area she excelled at or had any desire to, preferring to leave that to the others while she focused on the more physical nature of her job. But it was during times like this that Laet wished she’d bit the bullet and learnt all she could about the equipment she would be using. This time I swear I’ll actually do it, Laet promised.
Evan soon retracted the intercom from the device and placed it snugly back into her ear. She returned the device and took out a small tablet in its place, quickly readjusting the backpack around her body. “It’s out for good,” Evan said. “I can’t connect back to the base.”
“We don’t even know what we’re looking for!” Laet said in a hushed whisper. “Shit!” She pictured herself kicking her foot in frustration, imagining the painful vibration reverberating up her leg and into her hip, hearing the sole of her boot grating against pavement. She kept still.
“We’re going to have to go on without them.” Evan fiddled around with the tablet until the live feed of the hotel was on the display. “Gotta jump the next two balconies to get to Simon.” Evan strode to the end of the balcony and gestured forward. “We’ll capture him and transport him to a safe location until we can contact  The Warehouse.”
Laet wrapped a hand above Evan’s elbow as she started making her way over the railing. “This is not a good idea, we can’t just go off script-” Laet hesitated as Evan gave her a look, her hand slowly sliding off, “-not to this degree. The extraneous variables are off the charts.”
Evan lowered her scarf and sighed, a small cloud of warm air rising between them. She stepped closer, her eyes beseeching for Laet to reason. “We’ve had to abort missions so many times, Laet, this will get us fucking nixed. We can’t let him escape again, they’ll ruin us.”
“So what are we going to do once we’ve gotten him? What then?”
“We’ll improvise, just like we’ve been taught to.”
Laet remained silent, her eyes trained heavily on the other woman’s. She could hear the sound of an emergency vehicle wailing past the hotel and down the street, along with the crashing of the waves nearby. She pressed her lips together, rolling it before stepping back. “Okay,” she murmured.
Nodding, Evan lowered her scarf further and placed the tablet between her lips, stepping over the fence and onto to the edge of the balcony. The balcony of room 24 was about five meters away, not absurdly far at all, giving Evan all the more assurance to leap over with Laet following behind. The rushing of the wind masked their presence.
The doors of this balcony were closed yet the transparent curtains revealed the happenings inside. Laet spared them a glance, finding an older man and woman dancing together at the foot of their bed, the soft hum of instrumentals wafting out from the room. Evan and Laet didn’t bother crouching as they passed the wide doors, knowing that the intensity of the light inside the room would conceal them against the darkness of the night.
They were soon huddled at the balcony door of room 22, the gritty wall flush against their backs. Evan held the tablet as she glanced at the screen once more, her brows coming together at the star indicator’s sporadic movement on the live feed.
The blinds were closed, but again this meant little as the light from Simon’s quarters spilt out across the balcony, leaving two triangular slivers of darkness. Evan peeked into the room and saw a man, Simon, hunched over at the side of his bed. “He’s got his back turned,” she whispered. Evan gestured her head towards the other side of the door and waited as Laet got into position.
She looked once more inside to make sure Simon was not facing them, and when clear, stood up from her crouch to reach for the handle, opening the door just a fraction. The two women stared inside as he got up off the floor and shoved a vintage mobile phone into the backpack he was clutching. This continued for many minutes, with Evan and Laet readying to enter the room only for Simon to face the balcony.
Finally, as Simon’s bag was filling up and the room became emptier, Simon ducked down underneath the computer desk and started meticulously rooting around in the rubbish can.
Evan swung the door open, the hinges of the door easing along, allowing Laet slip in unnoticed. Evan kept silent as the static on the intercom suddenly returned, albeit almost mute, watching as Laet stalked up to Simon. She closed the door behind herself, the soft thudding of the door causing him to turn and fall onto his backside in alarm.
Laet kicked the underside of his jaw before he could register, sending him to the floor clutching his face. “Argh!” he groaned, before twisting left of Laet’s lunge, quickly getting onto his feet.
A smiling Evan greeted him with a sweep of the legs, causing him to stumble back onto the bed. As Evan approached him, he kicked out his legs and slammed into her torso before rolling over to the other side of the bed, only to find himself flanked. Laet was scowling as she faced him, her fingers twitching on the grip of her small brown brick.
Simon felt Laet kick his groin, leaving him to clutch at the metal cup between his thighs for only a second. So much for being prepared, he berated himself. He could see her eyebrows raising in surprise before she smacked the side of his head, leaving him disoriented.
Fingers gripped at his loose turquoise t-shirt from behind, digging painfully into the soft flesh of his neck as he was pushed back on the bed. Laet quickly straddles his thighs, restraining his movement, a stony expression on her face.
Simon gazed wretchedly into her eyes as Laet forcefully pressed the brick into his chest and squeezed the grip, watching detachedly as the glossy tip came to life, sending powerful sparks into his body. His body twitched violently underneath her but Laet kept the sparks going, stopping only when Simon fell unconscious.
Laet retracted her grip and glanced up at Evan. “Live feed?” As she was sliding off his limp body, the intercom in both their ears ringing static at a lower pitch.
They both whipped their gazes to each other as the volume of the static descended and eventually Isaiah’s voice penetrated through. “-....Agents, come in. Can you hear me?”
“Yes! Yes, we can hear you,” Evan responded immediately, relief plastered over her face.
Laet pulled off her scarf and parka, the heat of the room slowly suffocating her. “We’ve subdued Simon, and we’re in the clear,” she said. “We need to know what we’re looking for, buddy.”
Isaiah was furiously clicking away on his keyboard, “you’re looking for three small gold balls.”
“Real small,” a foreign voice piped in.
Laet and Evan exchanged a confused look.
“They’re identical, golden balls that have irregular spiralled edges,” Isaiah said.
Evan began digging through his backpack, gingerly taking out Simon’s clothing and inspecting it. Laet focused her attention on Simon, patting him down before removing his clothing.
“Who would’ve guessed,” Laet said softly.
Evan’s eyes flickered to Laet, keeping silent.
The two continued on for a while, with Evan filling in Isaiah and the foreign voice, a lady called Maria, on the happenings during their disconnect, watching as Laet grew frustrated as she finished her search on Simon. Laet eventually moved onto checking the bathroom for the Golde- balls, when Evan looked over Simon’s body once more. His t-shirt was bunched into a ball nesting in the crook of his neck along with his mismatching socks, his belt buckle not yet re-clasped.
The pads of Evan’s fingers ghosted across Simon’s torso, searching for any irregular protrusions. Her fingers inched up his pectoral muscle, her index finger ghosting over the indent of his armpit. A slight bump.
Evan kept her finger still as she marked the area with a waterproof marker from her backpack. She could hear the hollow thud of the toilet seat falling down and its following clink as Laet repositioned it back up. Didn’t think it’d play out like this, she thought grimly as she bent over and unsheathed a syringe on her calf.
She breathed in deeply, drowning her thoughts out with white noise as she turned around and stalked towards Laet.
It was early morning by the time Laet came to, judging by the pale blue sunlight streaming into the room. She tried to turn around but was stopped by a sharp, stinging pain on the side of her neck. Laet lifted her head and tentatively touched the source of the pain, surprised when her fingers come back free of blood.
Every muscle in her body was cramping as Laet blearily threw her legs over the side of the bed, and groggily took in the cold tray of food before her. Beside her feet lay her weapons and a busted recorder rested upon her parka and scarf. That’s when it all came rushing back to her.  
Simon. The Golden Eagle. Evan.
Evan.
Laet jumped up and grabbed her serrated knife, cautiously surveying the hotel room. Empty. Just… cold empty rooms. The tiles were cold underfoot as Laet stepped into the bathroom, noticing the lack of toiletries or mess near the sink. All the cupboards were empty. The floor was clean and nothing was left underneath the bed.
She swallowed painfully as her fingertips eased around the sliding door of the wardrobe. Her heart was in her throat for a single second at the brief glimpse of something in the wardrobe. Yet that something turned out to simply be coat racks and their corresponding plastic jackets.
It was then that it really sunk in. Laet kicked the door in frustration, refusing to acknowledge the hurt encompassing her.
She could feel her skin itching underneath her sweaty clothes, eager to tear apart her own skin. Despairing thoughts desperately trying to squeeze out of her tear ducts and onto the mess she was stuck in. Instead, Laet untied the messy bun holding her permed hair, ignoring her sick desire to pull at the strands until they fall loose, and pulled it into a taut ponytail. Don’t lose it.
Laet turned around to eye the meal on the table. The adrenaline she initially felt was waning so all she could do was stare at the tray of food before her. It was was a small dish of fūl - Evan’s favourite food. Said it reminded her of home, of better days- paired with Lebanese bread and small saucers of dips, one of which she knew was hummus.
What stole her attention, however, was a small piece of paper isolated on the far side of the tray. She would recognise that scrawny writing even on her deathbed. That brought her pause.

Growling, Laet scrunched up the paper and rocketed it towards the bin. Her lip curled as the sheet twirled around above the bin before gliding to the floor, meters away from the bin.
She fell onto the bed, her hands covering her face. Betrayal radiated from her chest and coursed through her body, turning hurt into anger, anger back into hurt, and hurt into numbness.
She lay like that for some time. The light outside intensifying and casting a golden glow into the room, memories of the last few months playing unbidden in her mind. Looking for signs that she missed.
Laet eventually roused from her detached state with an old familiarity, halfheartedly grasping at her bundle of stuff on the floor. After righting the equipment and concealing it underneath her clothes, Laet placed the intercom into her ear and dialled for The Warehouse.
Briiiiiiing…
Weird not hearing two dial tones.
“Routing your-,”
The Warehouse immediately connected to the call, cutting off the automated robot. “Agent Laet, please update us on the current events,” Dennis demanded.
Laet steeled her back but could not control the wavering of her brows, desperate to furrow. “Agent Evan is a threat. She incapacitated me last night as we were searching Simon’s hotel quarters. Both Simon and Agent Evan are unaccounted for, along with all his belongings and the Golden Eagle.”
She could hear Dennis, along with other members of their team cursing in the background.
“I’ll need an extraction team. I don’t know what she’s playing at, or if she’s working for somebody, what they’re working at. I’ll discuss things further when I get back. Just make sure I can see The Doctors as soon as possible,” Laet finished. She rubbed a hand over her face, the crusts in her eyes scraping at her skin and causing her to wince.
“Done,” Dennis said. His voice took on an odd lilt, laced heavily with concern, “what damage did you sustain?”
“She injected me with something that induced sleep extremely quickly. My neck is absolutely sore and I feel like I’ve fallen off a cliff onto a very unreceptive rock,” Laet said tiredly.
“Just get back to the airport, we’ll deal with everything else,” an unfamiliar young voice said. He sounded young, his both friendly and confident.
Laet frowned at the young man, unable to shake the feeling that nothing good awaited her back home at Lokaus. “Okay,” she said keeping her voice steady. “I’ll see you guys later.” Click.
With nothing left to do, Laet simply stared at the front door before moving to the side. She grabbed the scrunched up piece of paper lying on the floor and hid it inside the pocket of her parka, refusing to acknowledge the implications of what she was doing.
She quickly descended to the first floor, hiding her face from the lobby cameras as she left the hotel. The sun was high in the air and there was laughter and chattering amongst the small crowd. Laet prayed her heart would turn to stone as she walked alongside families, grieving a life she had lost before she could even experience it.

Here you are Nonny! Vishnal/Arthur is not a ship I've ever written for, but I'll be damned if it wasn't fun. it's too much fun to play with Vishnal's obvious uh... attraction to authority figures.
I went back and forth a few times on whether I wanted this to be a Modern Office AU or an in-game canon AU where Vishnal gets assigned as Arthur's personal butler.
but I had a little more fun writing the Office AU, so here it is. Lowly employee Vishnal and New Boss Arthur, complete with teasing coworkers.
Ficlet AU Prompts
“Heads up, new boss alert.” Vishnal’s heart gave an unpleasant lurch as his head shot up from the spreadsheet he had been working on to crane over the sea of cubicles. Leon’s warning had been spot-on. There was a small group of important looking people all gathered around what used to be Mr. Volkanon’s office. The office had been cleared out of any of their former manager’s personal effects after his retirement party last Friday, and it looked like someone new was moving in this morning.
Vishnal skimmed the small crowd, wondering who among the besuited bodies was going to be their next manager. Almost all of them were older, at least in their fifties, but there was one younger man amongst them, blond, bespectacled, holding himself rigid and looking nervous with an armful of folders. Vishnal had to sympathize, he hated being the intern lackey dragged along with the higher-ups.
The thought crossed his mind that he should probably get back to work, but he realized he wasn’t the only one in the office scoping out the crowd for their new boss. Actually, the only one among them who appeared to still be diligently working was his other cubicle-mate, Clorica, who had dozed off while staring at her computer screen. Vishnal nudged her awake.
Clorica woke with a small gasp, automatically wiggling her mouse and putting her fingers on the keyboard and typing in a few nonsense characters, proclaiming in a rushed whisper, “I’m working, I’m awake. Wait…” She looked at Vishnal and Leon who was doing his best to hide as a breathy cough. “What’s going on?”
“New boss is in. didn’t think you’d want to miss it.”
“Oh.” Clorica joined the rest of the office in watching the group at the front.
The group was breaking up, several handshakes were exchanged, before one by one they all walked out of the office, leaving a familiar woman and the young intern behind.
Ms. Ventuswill was the general manager of their work group, Mr. Volkanon’s boss. Vishnal frowned slightly, she wasn’t taking over as their manager, was she? That seemed like a demotion for her.
She stepped forward, clearing her throat before saying in her normal, commanding voice, “May I have your attention please?” It was a needless request, she had everyone’s attention already, but she did stop the murmurs that were bubbling up across the office. Ms. Ventuswill smiled at the silence office. “I’ll make this quick, I’m sure you have plenty of work to do today and don’t need any further distractions. I would like to introduce you to your new manager, Mister Arthur Lawrence.”
The young blond man stepped forward and shifted his hold on his folders to offer the office a small wave. “Hello’s, I am really looking forward to working with all of you.” He was much softer spoken than his predecessor. Mr. Volkanon’s booming voice could be heart two floor away if he got into a particular mood. Still, Mr. Lawrence’s voice carried quite clearly all the way to Vishnal’s ears in the furthest cubicle. “I think we can all be a very cohesive team. I hope you won’t mind if I take some of your time today to meet each of you individually, but until then, I’ll let you get back to it.”
At that, Ms. Ventuswill and Mr. Lawrence turned to step into his office, closing the door behind them. Chatter erupted immediately in the office space as cubicle-mates quickly began discussing their new boss. Vishnal’s cubicle was not exempt from that.
“Did you hear that?” Leon demanded, dropping into his chair so he leaned over the back. “His name is Lawrence. You think he’s one of the CEO’s kids?”
Clorica tapped her chin thoughtfully before saying, “Yes, I think he is. I remember seeing him at a couple of the company gatherings.”
Leon scoffed. “Nepotism in its finest.” He propped his chin on the back of his chair and swung around in a slow arc. “So, how do you think he’ll be? Overly familiar, open-door, pushover? Useless and lazy slob? Or a micromanaging tight-ass who’s desperate to impress daddy with his first big boy job?”
“I don’t know, I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.” Vishnal shrugged.
Leon hummed and spun around in a circle. “I bet he micromanages to impress daddy. He gives me that same small-anxious dog vibes that you do, Vis.”
“Hey! I do not micro-manage!”
Clorica snickered. “Only because you’re at the bottom of the food chain, mister color-coded-productivity tracker.”
Vishnal merely huffed and turned back to work. He would have to be more diligent than normal to make sure he got all of his work done with the added distractions today. His productivity tracker kept him organized, damnit, it was useful.
Mr. Lawrence worked through his personal introductions to their office group in order of seniority, it appeared, and Vishnal was the last one to go into his office. It was strange stepping into an office that had, just a few days ago, been covered with Mr. Volkanon’s personal touches – the man had a lot of grandchildren and plenty of pictures of all of them. The walls were still bare, freshly spackled and painted over to make a blank canvas for Mr. Lawrence’s décor of choice. All he had hung so far were two framed degrees, his Bachelor’s and a freshly obtained Master’s, but Vishnal spied a box sitting in a corner that looked like it had some more decorations tucked inside. Mr. Volkanon’s old desk had been replaced, as had his chair, with shiny new counterparts. Mr. Lawrence’s desk was already half covered with a scattering of paperwork and binders.
Vishnal paused in the doorway and knocked to announce his presence.
Mr. Lawrence looked up from the paper he was skimming and smiled, “Yes, come on it.” He walked around the desk and shook Vishnal’s hand. “Vishnal, right? Old Volkanon had nothing but good things to say about you.”
“O-oh, he did?” Vishnal’s brain forgot how to work briefly as he took in Mr. Lawrence. He was much more handsome up close than Vishnal had thought, and young – well, probably older than Vishnal, but still younger than any manager he’d ever known. His brown eyes sparkled, and his classes complimented the shape of his face, his impeccable suit fit him perfectly, cut to properly accentuate his lithe frame. He was vaguely aware that Mr. Lawrence was still speaking, he heard nothing because all him mind was doing was screaming a long, agonized “Ooooh nooo, he’s cute!”
He tuned in just in time to catch, “Go ahead and take a seat, I’d just like to take a minute to get to know you better.”
“Uh, yes Mister Lawrence.” Vishnal hurried to sit in the spare desk chair that had been rolled into the office.
“Please,” Mr. Lawrence tittered wearily, “Just call me Arthur. Mister Lawrence is my father, and I’m not nearly as much a stickler for formalities as he is.”
“Oh, okay, Arthur.” Vishnal liked the way that name rolled off his tongue. His anxiety on the other hand, didn’t quite care for that much informality between him and his new boss, and it was doing a wonderful job keeping a very tight leash on Vishnal’s imagination. Now was not the time to be fantasizing about the things he and his boss might do on this pristine new desk. Nope. Definitely not! To derail that train of thought, Vishnal tried a small joke. “I bet you’ve said that line about a hundred times today, huh?”
“Ninety-seven times, to be exact.” Mr. Law- Arthur smiled back weakly. Vishnal laughed weakly, realizing his joke had been recognized. “Really it’s more for logistics’ sake than anything. With half of my family working in this company, and a good portion of them my brothers, things get a little confusing with a dozen Mister Lawrences running around. That and it makes me feel old.” He shuddered comically and grinned. “I’m not even thirty yet, I can’t be a Mister.”
“Yeah, that makes sense. But I suppose it makes ordering company letter head much easier.”
Arthur laughed, genuinely this time, and it was such an endearing warm sound. “Yes, that it does.” Then the smile fell somewhat and he straightened the papers in front of him. “Now to business, I understand you’re our newest addition to the team. You just started… eight months ago?”
Vishnal somehow managed to keep his wild imagination in check over the next fifteen minutes and carried on an entirely professional conversation with his very cute new boss. How, he wasn’t entirely certain, because he was sure any moment Arthur would notice how flush Vishnal’s cheeks had become or how sweaty he suddenly was, or the nervous stuttering. But he said nothing about it and sent Vishnal back to work with another firm handshake and a smile.
Arthur must have just been polite, because as soon as Vishnal got back to his cubicle Leon called him out immediately. “Ooooh, I know that look. Someone’s got a crush on the new boss.”
“N-no I don’t!”
“But, Vis,” Clorica said, so sweetly and innocently. “Why is your face all red then?” She rolled over and gently poked on of Vishnal’s burning hot cheeks.
“Anxiety. I don’t do well with authority figures. I was nervous.”
His cubicle mates shared knowing looks and diabolical grins. “Uh-huh, sure,” Leon drawled. “A problem with authority figures.”
Vishnal brushed them off and turned back to his work, waking up the computer with a determined wiggle of the mouse. Leon would get bored eventually if he didn’t interact with him, and Clorica would eventually drop the game and get back to her own work. And so what if he had a little crush on their new boss? It was just a crush, perfectly normal and innocent and harmless. Even if his imagination was doing its best to bring up images of what the two of them could do in that office, or in the copy room, or maybe leaving early together on a Friday to go get some drinks…
“Oh look,” Clorica’s gleeful voice chimed in. “Now his ears are red too.”

Loupedeck+ Review: A Big Improvement From The Original
I’ve seen peripherals like the Loupedeck+ and its competitors around the market for a while now and I’ve been quite skeptical about the practicality of their use. Not that they are bad things, just that I’ve spent so many years with a keyboard & mouse combo that the thought of learning a new device to work on my images caused me a near panic attack. I will, however, admit that after getting hands on with the updated Loupedeck+ after WPPI 2019 that my opinion has changed greatly! While I’m still pretty clunky with it, the ease of use, accuracy, customization and versatility with the variety of supported apps make it more than worth the $249 price tag.
What Is It?
The Loupedeck+ is a photo & video editing console or keyboard that was created (initially by crowdfunding) to help you edit your photos & videos faster and easier than via the computer/mouse combination. It takes the software version of your sliders in Adobe Lightroom (among others) and gives you a physical button to use instead. I can also confirm that the knobs actually give you more control, or better accuracy than when using just the mouse in most of the applications as well.

At Loupedeck, We’re Passionate about each and every step of the photo and video editing process. From first shoot to the final edit, we know it’s the small details that often make the biggest difference between a good image or video and a great one.
Quality
Having not been familiar with the first generation of Loupedeck, I did a fair bit of homework as well as picking the brains of the folks at SLR who did the initial review here. Among the biggest “cons” that I found from users with the original was the actual build quality. From what they’ve told me and what I’ve seen in my own use of the Loupedeck+, while the dimensions are the same, the quality of the product has improved significantly. The console is sturdier and the buttons/dials have a much more stable and satisfying feel when pressed and adjusted.
Another improvement is the addition of completely customizable functions, buttons, and a much improved software/plugin & interface.
Setup & Install
Here’s what I loved about this product. The first thing you have to do is download the updated software/drivers for your operating system from the Loupedeck Website and install them like any other application. Once you’ve done that, just plug in the console via the USB cable and that’s it. The system even recognizes when you’ve connected the device and lets you know that it’s running. That’s literally it. No confusion, no crazy setups; it’s just ready to go out of the box.
As you can see from my screencap above, if you open the application the system recognizes which application is “using” the devices and from here, if you choose to, you can go crazy and start customizing the buttons and layouts to suit your personal preference. Regardless of whether or not you do, as you turn the dials and buttons on the console, the relating sliders and settings in Lightroom (or the other supported applications) adjust accordingly.
Using It / The Process
So here was my personal bottleneck using the Loupedeck+. I’ve had such a muscle memory developed for Lightroom after using it in the same process every day for nearly a decade that moving to this hardware was a bit of a challenge. I was actually afraid that it would take me days, if not weeks, to actually get used to and comfortable with this peripheral. As mentioned above, it nearly gave me a panic attack when I was looking at the PILE of client work I needed to rush through.

Once I got over that initial anxiety and actually started to play with the device, I was kinda blown away with how easy it was to get used to. In fact, I even found myself using more of the available sliders/features in LR simply because they were laid out so clearly in front of me and not hidden in my often collapsed menus on screen. The part that got me was just how accurate adjusting the dials was compared to manually dragging the sliders in the OS. I found myself happier with my edits and have started to test out more features and creative tools that usually were glanced over in the past.
If you’re anything like me, you’ll find yourself looking at the screen, finding the slider, then looking back to the Loupedeck+ and finding the corresponding Dial/Button, making an adjustment, and then looking back at the screen & sliders and back again to make sure everything worked the way it should…and then you’ll realize you’re wasting a ton of time and you can just focus on the image while making fast and accurate adjustments with a newfound muscle memory for each of the preferred dials & buttons in your workflow.
Granted, I’m still not up to the speed I want to be with it, but it’s starting to feel natural and that’s making the difference every time I’ve sat down to edit. The learning curve is actually quite simple once you actually start to use it.
Price Point
The original Loupedeck launched with a price point of $300 US and now the updated Loupedeck+ is available for just $249. While that may seem steep, when you compare it to the other options on the market, it’s actually one of the best and most affordable ones out there. Especially when you look at the extreme high end console/decks for video production that start at price points of nearly $10,000. If you spend a lot of time working in any of the applications listed below (with more being added), $249 is a very small price to pay for the amount of time it can save you and the amount of creative control it will add for you!

Who Is It For?
Let’s get straight to it. If you’re in the business of dealing with a large number of files like a wedding or event photographer, than this is the device for you. It feels like that is the primary target market for the Loupedeck company and it definitely works there. As a wedding or event photographer, this would make editing a lot more fun, especially since I can sit back at my desk with the console on my lap and work away with ease on my images.
Even if you’re not a wedding or event photographer there is still a lot of value in this device for portrait and landscape shooters. Since speed isn’t really at the front of your requirements, this device will let you get more flexible and creative with your edits, finding and using more features within lightroom than you may have without, thus letting you explore many more possibilities with your final images.
The only market I didn’t see any real value beyond the “fun” portion was Commercial Photography. The reason here is typically in this world you’re shooting for a specific look, culling images quickly, and then editing small batches (if not just a single file) in Photoshop to meet a client deadline. Again, maybe as a commercial photographer you’d love it, but terms of a first impression and its broad usage, that’s really about the only field I felt wouldn’t get the most out of it.
So if you’re a high volume shooter, or you spend a lot of time in Adobe Lightroom already making every image absolutely perfect, it may be worth knocking on your friends door to borrow their loupedeck to see if the device is right for you.

Hitman 2 Review: It’s a Hit, Man…2
It was many years ago that I first played as Agent 47, and I found the game series interesting but a bit too slow in how you must have the patience to wait for the right moment to kill your designated victim. I know, I know; these are stealth games so they have to be slow-paced. Given the pacing and my lack of skill in this genre, I’d just dabble in prior Hitman games back when game magazines would come with demo discs and such.
The only truly positive experience I had with Hitman until now was Hitman movie at the cinema. Even if the movie didn’t receive good marks I enjoyed it and I found it engaging, but we’re not here to discuss about the quality of movies-based-on-games.
Sixteen years after the first Hitman 2, it’s time to see if I can have a positive experience and stealth-succeed at this new Hitman 2.

My Impressive First Mission
From the start, Hitman 2’s presentation is very grand. There’s a great opening cinematic, fantastic cinematography, seamless transitions between introductions and actual gameplay, excellent voice acting, and much more.
All this creates such a powerful draw, getting me fully engaged into the action, ready to direct Agent 47 towards his target. However, I actually find myself preferring to stay close and admire the panorama: a marvelous grey sky reigns over a beautiful beach, with the wind breezing by Agent 47’s bald head.

Loupedeck+ Review: A Big Improvement From The Original
I’ve seen peripherals like the Loupedeck+ and its competitors around the market for a while now and I’ve been quite skeptical about the practicality of their use. Not that they are bad things, just that I’ve spent so many years with a keyboard & mouse combo that the thought of learning a new device to work on my images caused me a near panic attack. I will, however, admit that after getting hands on with the updated Loupedeck+ after WPPI 2019 that my opinion has changed greatly! While I’m still pretty clunky with it, the ease of use, accuracy, customization and versatility with the variety of supported apps make it more than worth the $249 price tag.
What Is It?
The Loupedeck+ is a photo & video editing console or keyboard that was created (initially by crowdfunding) to help you edit your photos & videos faster and easier than via the computer/mouse combination. It takes the software version of your sliders in Adobe Lightroom (among others) and gives you a physical button to use instead. Quality

Setup & Install
Here’s what I loved about this product. The first thing you have to do is download the updated software/drivers for your operating system from the Loupedeck Website and install them like any other application. Once you’ve done that, just plug in the console via the USB cable and that’s it. The system even recognizes when you’ve connected the device and lets you know that it’s running. That’s literally it. No confusion, no crazy setups; it’s just ready to go out of the box.
As you can see from my screencap above, if you open the application the system recognizes which application is “using” the devices and from here, if you choose to, you can go crazy and start customizing the buttons and layouts to suit your personal preference. Regardless of whether or not you do, as you turn the dials and buttons on the console, the relating sliders and settings in Lightroom (or the other supported applications) adjust accordingly.
Using It / The Process
So here was my personal bottleneck using the Loupedeck+. I’ve had such a muscle memory developed for Lightroom after using it in the same process every day for nearly a decade that moving to this hardware was a bit of a challenge. I was actually afraid that it would take me days, if not weeks, to actually get used to and comfortable with this peripheral. As mentioned above, it nearly gave me a panic attack when I was looking at the PILE of client work I needed to rush through.

Once I got over that initial anxiety and actually started to play with the device, I was kinda blown away with how easy it was to get used to. In fact, I even found myself using more of the available sliders/features in LR simply because they were laid out so clearly in front of me and not hidden in my often collapsed menus on screen. The part that got me was just how accurate adjusting the dials was compared to manually dragging the sliders in the OS. I found myself happier with my edits and have started to test out more features and creative tools that usually were glanced over in the past.
If you’re anything like me, you’ll find yourself looking at the screen, finding the slider, then looking back to the Loupedeck+ and finding the corresponding Dial/Button, making an adjustment, and then looking back at the screen & sliders and back again to make sure everything worked the way it should…and then you’ll realize you’re wasting a ton of time and you can just focus on the image while making fast and accurate adjustments with a newfound muscle memory for each of the preferred dials & buttons in your workflow.
Granted, I’m still not up to the speed I want to be with it, but it’s starting to feel natural and that’s making the difference every time I’ve sat down to edit. The learning curve is actually quite simple once you actually start to use it.
Price Point
The original Loupedeck launched with a price point of $300 US and now the updated Loupedeck+ is available for just $249. While that may seem steep, when you compare it to the other options on the market, it’s actually one of the best and most affordable ones out there. Especially when you look at the extreme high end console/decks for video production that start at price points of nearly $10,000. If you spend a lot of time working in any of the applications listed below (with more being added), $249 is a very small price to pay for the amount of time it can save you and the amount of creative control it will add for you!

Who Is It For?

It feels like that is the primary target market for the Loupedeck company and it definitely works there. As a wedding or event photographer, this would make editing a lot more fun, especially since I can sit back at my desk with the console on my lap and work away with ease on my images.
Even if you’re not a wedding or event photographer there is still a lot of value in this device for portrait and landscape shooters. Since speed isn’t really at the front of your requirements, this device will let you get more flexible and creative with your edits, finding and using more features within lightroom than you may have without, thus letting you explore many more possibilities with your final images.
The only market I didn’t see any real value beyond the “fun” portion was Commercial Photography. The reason here is typically in this world you’re shooting for a specific look, culling images quickly, and then editing small batches (if not just a single file) in Photoshop to meet a client deadline. Again, maybe as a commercial photographer you’d love it, but terms of a first impression and its broad usage, that’s really about the only field I felt wouldn’t get the most out of it.
So if you’re a high volume shooter, or you spend a lot of time in Adobe Lightroom already making every image absolutely perfect, it may be worth knocking on your friends door to borrow their loupedeck to see if the device is right for you.
